How contaminants can adversely affect the flame-resistant clothing items

Industrial sites that often make use of fire and flammable components for carrying out their tasks are frequently filled with contaminants that have flammable elements such as creosote on the telephone poles, insulating oil in the transformers and machinery hydraulic oils. There can also be insect sprays that are used to fend off mosquitoes and other insects and pests. These chemicals can compromise the protective features of the flame-resistant apparel that is often used in these working environments. While the worksite contaminants cannot interfere with the basic FR properties of these fabrics, the flammable contaminants can effectually mask the FR, thus causing the fabrics to burn as long as the fuel gets totally consumed.

While it is not possible to completely avoid interacting with these worksite contaminants, one can take precautions to protect their FR clothing  so that they retain their properties of fighting flames and related hazards. One of the ways in which the flame-resistant apparels can be protected from contaminants is by making sure that they do not get in touch with DEET or different types of DEET-containing insect repellents. While these insect repellents do not damage the flame-resistance properties of the fabrics, they simply mask it thereby making them ineffective to do their work. After laundering the garments, the DEET chemicals are removed and the FR clothes begin working as usual.

Clean FR apparels are naturally safer FR apparels, although it is difficult to avoid soiling of the garment with transformer oil, creosote or other types of common jobsite chemicals. Therefore it is necessary to take steps for prevent the contamination of FR clothing items. All FR apparels should be routinely cared for and maintained in order to avoid contaminant buildup which can in turn reduce flame-resistance. Industry standards like NFPA 2113 should be followed for this purpose.

  1. Works great my husband works fracking and wears flame resistant cloth this while doing that. It’s FR and helps keep him warm in the cold weather.
